Advent Week 3 - Day 3
Day 3: The Mighty Healer
Scripture Reading: John 1:1-4; Matthew 8:5-13
John 1:1-4
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
Matthew 8:5-13
5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”
7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.
As the Mighty Healer, Christ possesses the power to restore both physical and spiritual health. He touched the leper, healed the sick, and raised the dead. His healing power extends to every aspect of our lives.
But who is this healer? He is none other than our creator and source of life. John, through the power of the holy Spirit, introduces Jesus as the Word from the beginning of time and that “All things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
As the Creator of life, Jesus has the ultimate authority to restore it. He breathed life into Adam, giving him the breath of life. As the author of life, He can heal the sick, raise the dead, and restore what has been broken. His healing power is not limited by physical constraints or medical science. It is a divine power that transcends human understanding.
When Jesus healed the sick, He was not merely healing a physical ailment. He was demonstrating His divine authority over sickness and disease. Jesus marveled at the faith of the Centurion because of all the Jews who should have known, The Centurion was able to recognize His authority over life itself. When Jesus healed, He was restoring the wholeness of the individual, both physically and spiritually. While physical miracles can still happen today, the point of the gospel and the will of God is not simply physical healing in this life, but to address our greatest need, spiritual healing for the life to come.
Reflection:
In what ways have you experienced the healing power of Christ in your own life or the lives of others? How has he addressed your greatest need?
