Trusting the Resurrection - Day 4

33 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?”
They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
Hebrews 4:15 - 16
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
In the heart of human sorrow, we encounter the divine. Jesus, confronted with the grief surrounding Lazarus' death, weeps. This isn't the detached sorrow of a distant observer, but the raw, emotional outpouring of a heart deeply connected to humanity.
This display of human emotion, this vulnerability – Jesus weeping at the tomb of Lazarus – reveals the profound truth of Christ's humanity. It shatters the image of an aloof deity, distant and unapproachable, residing in some remote, ethereal realm. Instead, we encounter a compassionate Savior who understands our pain intimately. Hebrews 4:15 powerfully articulates this truth: "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” The Writer of Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus experienced the full spectrum of human temptations and trials. He faced the same pressures, the same internal struggles, the same external challenges that we encounter. Yet, unlike us, he remained sinless, offering a perfect example of how to navigate life's difficulties with grace and integrity.
Amidst the display of human vulnerability in John 11, we also witness the undeniable power of the divine. With the simple command, "Lazarus, come forth!" (John 11:43), He demonstrates an authority over death that only God Himself possesses. This breathtaking display of power underscores the profound mystery of the Incarnation – that the eternal God entered human history, experiencing the joys and sorrows of human existence while retaining His divine attributes. This truth, that Jesus is both fully God and fully man, offers profound comfort and hope.
This understanding of Christ's humanity, along with his deity, has profound implications for our faith. It removes the barriers between us and God, making Him accessible and relatable. We can approach Him with confidence, knowing that He understands our struggles, our weaknesses, and our deepest longings. We can find solace in the knowledge that we are not alone in our suffering, for our Savior has walked this path before us. This understanding fosters a more intimate and meaningful relationship with God, one built on trust, empathy, and a shared human experience.
