John 13
15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. - Jn 13:15-16.
John 13 powerfully portrays the profound love and radical service of Jesus. Knowing his divine identity, the nearness of his suffering, and the betrayal that lurked among his closest followers (what he knew) Jesus, the Lord of all, took on the role of a servant, humbly washing the feet of his disciples, even the feet that would soon betray him to his crucifixion. This act, a powerful demonstration of humility and unrestrained love (what he did) transcends mere historical fact; it serves as a living testament to the kind of service Jesus calls us to emulate. He beckons us to follow his example, to shed our pride, embrace humility, and love others not simply with words, but with tangible acts of service. Just as he cleansed his disciples’ feet, preparing them for deeper fellowship, we are called to serve, to forgive, and to love, mirroring the boundless grace we have received As the old adage goes, actions speak louder than words. How can we put our love into actions, our words into service.
Reflect on a time you served someone without regard or expectation of receiving anything in return. How did that make you feel? (Why?)
