Christ Is Our Example: Rejoice In Sacrificial Service

Paul presents a radical alternative to our culture's self-centered mentality by showing how true joy comes from sacrificial service to others. While circumstances may challenge us, dealing with difficult people requires developing a submissive mind that prioritizes Jesus first, others next, and yourself last. This approach stands in stark contrast to the me-first attitude that pervades our society. Paul builds his call for unity on four solid foundations: consolation in Christ, comfort of love, fellowship of the Spirit, and affection and mercy. He warns against selfish ambition and empty pride, instead encouraging believers to operate from lowliness of mind, esteeming others better than themselves. Since believers have Christ, they possess everything necessary for life and godliness, including His comfort, love, Holy Spirit, and example to follow. The most powerful example comes from Christ Himself, who existed in the form of God but willingly emptied Himself of His heavenly privileges. Through seven steps of humility, Jesus went from the highest place of authority to becoming a bondservant, taking human form, submitting to earthly authorities, becoming obedient even to death on a cross. Because of this voluntary sacrifice, God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name above every name. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. The practical application involves actively serving others and asking what Jesus would do in difficult situations, letting Christ live through us as we die to self.
