A Prayer for Empowerment & Apprehension
Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3:14-21 provides a blueprint for spiritual growth and meaningful prayer. Following his doctrinal teaching in the first three chapters, Paul demonstrates how to approach God with proper reverence and humility, bowing his knees before the Father. This physical posture reflects an inner attitude of submission and respect that should characterize our prayers. The heart of Paul's prayer contains four progressive requests that build upon each other: First, he asks for inner strengthening through the Holy Spirit, emphasizing spiritual growth over physical comfort. Second, he prays for Christ to fully dwell and feel at home in our hearts, having access to every area of our lives. Third, he desires believers to be rooted and grounded in love, able to comprehend the four dimensions of Christ's love—its width (worldwide scope), length (eternal nature), depth (sacrificial extent), and height (heavenly destination). Finally, he prays for believers to be filled with God's fullness as the culmination of the previous requests. Paul concludes with a powerful benediction reminding us that God can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine through His power working within us. This prayer challenges us to examine our spiritual posture, invite Christ into every area of our lives, and pursue a deeper understanding of His love rather than settling for spiritual mediocrity.
