John 20 Part 2

Apr 21, 2025

19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” - Jn 20:19.

Fear manifests in various ways for believers - from worrying about others' opinions to financial concerns and health issues. The disciples themselves experienced intense fear after Jesus' crucifixion, hiding away from persecution. However, Jesus addresses these fears through His constant presence, His finished work on the cross, His Word, and the power of His Spirit.

The story of Thomas highlights the distinction between doubt and unbelief, and it's important to recognize that Thomas often gets a bad rap. The reality is that doubt is a common human experience; it's an intellectual struggle while still wanting to believe. We all, like Thomas, face moments where we question or lack confidence. Unbelief, on the other hand, is a spiritual problem, a refusal to trust without proof. Jesus responds with compassion to honest questions, as seen with Thomas, while encouraging greater faith.

Moving from fear to faith requires practical steps: remembering Jesus’ presence, studying Scripture, maintaining fellowship with other believers, and focusing on God's promises rather than circumstances. It involves allowing God to "forge" us in faith – a process where, like metal being shaped, we may go through trials and difficulties that ultimately strengthen us. This process involves overcoming resistance through godly encouragement. By taking action to serve others and allowing the Holy Spirit to strengthen faith, believers can experience the peace Jesus promises, even in difficult times. This journey from fear to faith isn't just about feeling better – it's about experiencing the abundant life Jesus died to give us.
